Hot water bottle: cheapest warmth, no running cost
Fill it with hot tap water or water that has cooled for a few minutes after boiling – never boiling water. Squeeze out the air before closing the cap, check that it does not leak, and wrap it in a cloth or cover before it touches your skin. Put it in the bed 10 minutes before you sleep to warm the sheets, then move it to your feet.
Electric heating belt: steady warmth while you move
A heating waist belt straps around the tummy or lower back and keeps a steady, gentle heat; ours also has vibration (massage) modes. Start on the lowest setting, do not use it while sleeping, and switch it off after each session. People with heart conditions, diabetes (reduced feeling in the skin) or who are pregnant should ask a doctor before using heat pads.
Small electric heater: quick warmth in one spot
A 12-inch electric heater warms the area near you when gas pressure drops. Keep it at least one metre from curtains, bedding and furniture, plug it straight into a wall socket rather than a crowded extension board, and never leave it running while you sleep or leave the room.
A safety warning about gas heaters
Every winter in Pakistan, families are hurt by gas leaks and carbon monoxide from gas heaters left on in closed rooms at night. Carbon monoxide has no smell. If you use a gas heater, keep a window slightly open, turn it off before sleeping, and never use a gas heater or angeethi in a closed bedroom.
Keep the heat in: the cheap upgrades
- Door bottom sealing strip, 5 m – Rs 849: stops cold air and dust under doors.
- Wool thermal socks from Rs 699: warm feet make the whole body feel warmer.
- A fleece blanket on top of your razai – see our blanket buying guide.
